Week 2- World Trade Center, The Harbinger and Poetry

During week 2 we will finish WTC-the movie, begin reading The Harbinger and take a brief look at writing poetry. If you were in my 700 groups then you have already written some poetry in English, you need to review the poetry in the copy packet, we will listen to some poems as read by the poets on Wednesday you will write a couple of poems and on Thursday you will share one of them with your class.

For your posting here: Please write a short reflection, answering the following questions:

1.) Have you ever done anything heroic?

2.) Have you ever felt driven to help others after a natural disaster? e.g. hurricane, tornado, earthquake, tidal wave

3.) In the movie, when officer Jimeno learned that it would be hours before they could dig out his sergeant, because they had to dig his leg out from under the rubble-Jimeno told the rescuers to cut off his leg. Could you do such a selfless act to save the life of a coworker?

4.) Many people around the world dislike the politics of the United States; this semester you'll have the opportunity to learn a lot about American history and maybe gain a better understanding of how we think. Do believe that terrorism is a world problem or that it only affects the places which are attacked?

Please do not forget to be correcting each other's errors.

    2. I do not know how to drive so, well...No.
    3. Yes, I think so, I mean I really prefer to lose a leg than a friend.
    4. It is a world problem because it makes everybody feel afraid and nervous about war, it brings insecurity and hatred for every contry.

    2. Hi Mario, I guess you understand the 2nd question wrong, the teacher refers to "propel" or "impulse" with word "driven", no to "drive a car or something similar".

  2. 1.)Well, I guess we have a different way to define a heroic action, to me, an heroic action is make a change (no matter if it´s big or little). In my case, yes, I´ve done a little heroic action that maybe we should do as a normal thing. In simple words is offer my help when I see people in troubles.
2.)Of course, I think is the least we can do.
3.) Yes! I agree with Mario, I really prefer to lose a leg than a friend. Sometimes we need to sacrifice little things to conserve others things more valuable.
4.) Yes, terrorism is a world problem, but most part of attacks happen in potential countries, obviously others countries less significant are not exempt.

    1. I think is awesome that you would help any person that seems to be in troubles. Believe it or not I think that everyday there is less and less people that would do something like that for someone. It's pretty cool :)

    2. I quite agree with you about different way to define a heroic action, and that it's doesn't matter how big or little, always make a change.

  3. 1) No, I haven't done anything heroic.
    2) Yeah, in a earthquake I was with my little brother and I tried to put him on a save place. I could do anything to help others.
3)Yeah I agree with Jimena I prefer lose a part of body than a friend.
    4) Terrorism is a world problem, and it attacks just a vulnerable place with power to damage innocent people.

  5. 1) No. I have helped other people with their problems and common stuff. But saving someone who is in real danger and that his life is in risk, no.

    2) No, I haven't. But I would do it without hesitation

    3) Yeah I could do it if I have no other choice. I think Officer Jimeno was being desperate. As long as there is the slightest chance to leave of a danger situation with our bodies completely, I think is worth trying, but if there is really no choice, any sacrifice is worth to save a life.

    4) I think is a global problem. Is like a cancer that keeps spreading trought out the world. Every day more countries are affected directly from the terrorist. And I think this makes a lot of fear because if a country is attacked by terrorist. What makes us think that our country can't be attacked as well?

I think is a really heavy burden when your job actually is to save other people lifes. Policemen, firefighters and doctors, I think their job is really important but a the same time it must be really hard for them, because we as they are humans and can make mistakes and if this happens maybe they would be atormented because they would think that they could have done something to save a person or more people.

  6. Hi everyone.

    1.- No. I haven't done anything heroic.
2.- Well, At some time, I donated money for the persons harmed by natural disasters.
3.- It´s a deep and reflexive question; but when you love a person any thing is possible, so gladly I would do it.
4.- I believe that the terrorism is a world problem because it´s affects everyone. Though we do not know the affected persons, we all are human beings and for this reason we all must help.
It is a problem that is finishing with the society and that ironically it´s born of it.

    2. Yes, everytime that a natural disaster appear I help send them food.
    3. For save the life of someone I could do it, if it's the only way to save her/him I will.
    4. It's a world problem, if we don't learn to accept and respect other cultures and the people it doesn't matter where they form, will continue terrorism.

    4. yes it's a world problem, the guns, are made in a lot of countries, in that countries children know how to use them, it's normal life together sleep with guns. I can't believe why the population think terrorism it's problem of only some nations.

    2. Yes in a minimum grade. I feel fear with these kind of desasters.
    3. Of course! I can imagine a happy life if I am the reason of somone's death.
    4. Terrorism affect entirely our world. All of us are conected and if some phenpmenom affects just one thing/place, it will affects the rest.

  13. Well, I think I've never been in a hard situation to do something really heroic, but the action I do most, are rescuing animals, I think the worst thing in this world for me, is watch the animals suffer, I hate it! so every time y have the opportunity to help one I do it, like taking care of them when they arrive my home, like the dogs of the street, and looking a home for them. Some time, my sister and I found a box with kittens in there, so we took them with us and we looked them for somebody to take care of them, we felt good. In another time a doggie was rolled by a horrible woman, so my sister and I went for him and gave him some water and took him to a veterinary, that was sad for us.. In natural disasters, I've never been in one, I think so.. :S
About the movie, is a really emotional movie, it made me cry! It really did, but if I were in that place, probably I wouldn't be able to ask to cut my leg.
And answering the last question, terrorism not only affects the place atacked it affects many other places, probably all the world in somehow.

  14. I come from a long line of heroes, but I think we have never thought of it in those terms. Many of my family have been military or guardsman who go to work specifically in disasters.

I have been a Red Cross Certified First Responder since I was 16 years old, I worked on an Ambulance crew through college when I was young, then as a nurse until 1996. But here as recently as April of 2009 a man riding his horse was hit by a drunk driver in Puenta Sillas (right in front of us on the road) I stopped and gave him First Aid and stabilized him before the Ambulance arrived.

My father-in-law is 86 years old and still works for Red Cross running a chain saw crew which searches for bodies of casualties after natural disasters.

I think "heroism" is more common than you all may think, maybe because you are still very young or have not been close by when natural disasters occur. Or it could be cultural???

I believe it also has to do with willingness to be used in tough situations. I have always worked within the social service agencies in my country and they are the first responders; when a gas pipeline blew-up in my town in 1985 the agency I worked for provided counseling services for the families of the victims.

  15. Hi classmates
1)about making a heroic act over my life, I could say that once save my brother from drowning at the beach, we swim, he had a cramp and I drives into the arena

2)whenever an accident occurs nationally or internationally, I would be there to help people

3)I believe that if you can save a person in perfect condition even if it takes hours, it is better to go it alone just to save some time

4)terrorism is a global cancer affects where it originates but equally where they attack

  16. 1)A few years ago, my neighbor had his dog tied because he didn't want it anymore and he was waiting for the dog's death without feed it. My family and I talked with "Amigos de los animales" for try to help that poor dog, and give it food when our neighbor couldn't see us.
    2) When that kind of situation happend I try to help, even if is only with something little, because maybe that can support someone. We don't know when that could happen to us, and if we are ok we have the posibility to look for the people who need it.
3)I don't know, they got really close because their situation was totally complicated. The things that they lived together while they were waiting and also the way that they support each other change our sense of life, and in that case, the Jimeno's decision is get sense.
    4) The terrorims is something that affects everyone, we can't be insensitive to the other's pain, and attack and try to decrease the terrorims is a homework for every country.
